Ballarat High School commenced in 1907 as Agricultural High
School and today has a student population of
approximately 1450 students.

Our emphasis on student connectedness and engagement stems from our innovative approach to
teaching and learning. In building a ‘Learning Community’, our Year 7/8 team
structure, Year 9 ARCH program and our pathway program Years 10 to 12, allow our
teachers to model innovative teaching and learning

The small team structures along with our student wellbeing practices ensure that all students
interact in a safe and positive learning environment. Our extensive enrichment
programs and exceptional facilities extend their talents beyond the classroom.
We have a number of Parent Support Groups where parents can become involved in their child’s
education. These groups include the Parent Support Group, Chaplaincy, Boat Club,
Music Support Club, Energy Breakthrough, and Student Wellbeing.
ROLE DESCRIPTION:
Over the past 6 years Ballarat High
School has consolidated its process
of pathway planning for students aged 15-19, in order to assist them to make the
most informed and rewarding decisions about their future.
A key element of Careers and MIPS is Pathways Planning.
There are three broad aims: That all students
will:
Develop skills to manage their pathway now and throughout their working
lives.
Develop their knowledge, understanding and experience of opportunities in education, training
and employment.
Move successfully through the transition phase from compulsory schooling to further
education, training and employment.
Pathways’ planning has an individual focus with one adult having primary responsibility
for working with a young person, assisting them to negotiate a pathway and to
assist them in following it through.
Initially the main target group is those 15 – 19 year-old students seen as most at risk of
not completing their secondary school.
However, the program has extended so that all Year 9-12 students at
Ballarat High
Schoolhave a Pathway
Plan.
Another feature of MIPS is tracking the destinations of school leavers.
An effective destination tracking procedure must be maintained for all 15
to 19 year-olds exiting the School for a period of six months.
This is intended to stop young people dropping out of School without the
support required to engage them in further training or employment
options.
Inenhancing outcomes for students, schools are required to develop networks and
partnerships with other providers and community
agencies.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The holder of the position will work as a team member with the other Pathways
Co-ordinator and closely with the Later Years Programs Coordinator, Assistant
Principals, Year Level Coordinators, VCAL Coordinator, and Welfare Team to
implement a pathway program in accordance with Department of Education and
Early Childhood guidelines.
The key scope of the position may include but is not limited
to:
Revise and
maintain the pathways planning process for students in Years 9 to
12.
Provide
counselling to individuals and small groups of students about education and
training in order to establish and regularly review their Pathway Plans.
Follow up
students exiting the school, both early leavers and those completing Year 12, to
assist them in engaging in further education, training or
employment.
Maintain a
computer data base, using the CASES21 software application, for tracking exit
students.
Maintain and
update the equipment and resources in the Career Information
Centre.
Organise and co-ordinate the work experience programme, including, where applicable, pre
& post placement counselling, monitoring students’ progress while at work
and liaison with employers, both in respect to individual students & the
work experience programme as a whole.
Provide advice to VCAL staff in their organisation of VCAL work
placements.
Liaise with relevant community groups to engage their support for both individual students
and the schools Pathway Planning in general. This would
include employers, other educational institutions, support agencies such as
Youth Pathways, THAT PLACE, Job Placement Employment & Training and various
training providers such as BRACE and Ballarat Group
Training.
Provide information about and promote tertiary pathways for Year 12
students.
Keep records of all students Pathway Plans.
Assist Year
Level Co-ordinators with parent information evenings concerning subject
selections, tertiary entrance and career
information.
Contribute to
developing School Policy on Work Education and School Industry
Links.
Participating
member of the Later Years committee, Ballarat Careers Education Network and the
MIPs network.
Participate in
ongoing evaluation of Pathways Planning and the MIPS programme and provide
accurate data and reports for the School and
DEECD.
Assess the
necessity for, and assist in establishing, programmes to meet the needs of
students as identified through the Pathways Plans i.e. work education
programs.
Have the
ability to provide professional support to teachers who may become involved in
pathways planning programmes.
Assist in the
organisation, implementation and evaluation of the Pathways
Expo.
Other duties as
directed by the School Principal.
KEY SELECTION
CRITERIA:

affinity and enthusiasm for working with young people and exposure to youth
oriented environments, particularly schools, training organisations or youth
support services.
2.
Excellent
communication, interpersonal and people skills to effectively liaise with
teaching staff, the school administration and workers in a range of community
agencies.
3.
The demonstrated
ability to identify issues and barriers that could prevent students achieving
future success and assisting school leavers to develop strategies that will
empower them to ‘own’ their transition
process.
4.
A well developed
knowledge of a broad range of vocational programmes available to school leavers,
and of community support agencies.
5.
Demonstrated ability
to plan strategically, manage complex events and to balance competing
demands.
6.
Demonstrated ability
to competently use computer software applications – word processing, data base,
spread sheets etc.
